Fourth of July 2016 TV Specials

This coming Monday is Independence Day, and the celebration of the United States’ 240th birthday!

As such, live television programming that revolves around this display of patriotism will be airing on multiple networks; additionally, many movies inspired by the founding of the U.S. and other key moments in American history will be appearing.

Please see below for a schedule of the TV events. All times are EST.


*8 p.m. “A Capitol Fourth,” PBS. Performances from Smokey Robinson, Kenny Loggins, Gavin DeGraw, Cassadee Pope and more.

*8 p.m. “Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks Spectacular,” NBC. Performances from Kenny Chesney, 5 Seconds of Summer, Meghan Trainor, the Radio City Rockettes and others.

*9 p.m. “Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular,” CBS. Performances from Demi Lovato, Nick Jonas, Little Big Town and the Boston Pops Esplande Orchestra are featured.


John Paul Jones*7:30 a.m. “The Howards of Virginia,” TCM. In the mid-1700s, Virginian Matt Howard (Cary Grant) and his family experience the Revolutionary War.

*9:30 a.m. “John Paul Jones,” TCM. The life of Scottish American sailor John Paul Jones (Robert Stack), one of the U.S.’ most well-known naval fighters during the Revolutionary War, is portrayed in this 1959 film.

*11:45 a.m. “The Scarlet Coat,” TCM. U.S. Maj. John Bolton (Cornel Wilde) and British Maj. John Andre (Michael Wildling) engage one another during the Revolutionary War.

*1:30 p.m. “The Devil’s Disciple,” TCM. As the Revolutionary War unfolds, the Rev. Anthony Anderson (Burt Lancaster) and an outcast (Kirk Douglas) must make bold decisions.

*3 p.m. “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington,” TCM. This 1939 Academy Award-winning political comedy-drama features a naïve man (James Stewart) taking on corruption in the U.S. Senate.

*3:45 p.m. “National Treasure,” HBO. Historian Benjamin Franklin Gates (Nicholas Cage) quests for hidden world treasures that were secreted away by American Freemasons.

*8 p.m. “The Music Man,” TCM. Salesman Harold Hill (Robert Preston) travels to various towns, conducting a band-inspired hoax against the residents.

*8 p.m. “Independence Day,” HBO. In this 1996 sci-fi classic, Capt. Steven Hiller (Will Smith) and satellite technician David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) assist President Thomas J. Whitmore (Bill Pullman) in battling an alien threat to Earth.

*10:45 p.m. “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” TCM. James Cagney stars as beloved Broadway musical writer George M. Cohan in this 1942 Academy Award-winning picture.
